Damit der Obelisk in Kassel bleibt: Spendenaktion für umstrittenes documenta-Kunstwerk
Kassel. Damit der Obelisk auf dem Königsplatz in Kassel bleiben kann, hat die Stadt Kassel am Mittwoch gemeinsam mit dem Künstler Olu Oguibe zu einer gemeinsamen Spendenaktion aufgerufen.
Damit soll die Ankaufsumme von 600 000 Euro für das 16,20 Meter hohe documenta-Kunstwerk zusammenkommen. Auf diese Zielgröße habe man sich mit dem Künstler verständigt, teilt Kulturdezernentin Susanne Völker bei einer Pressekonferenz im Rathaus mit.
Damit liege es nun in der Hand der Kasseler Bürger, ob das Kunstwerk, das sich mit dem Thema Flucht auseinandersetzt, in Kassel bleibt. „Ich war ein Fremdling und ihr habt mich beherbergt“, ein Zitat aus dem Matthäus-Evangelium, steht als humanistische Botschaft in den Sprachen Deutsch, Englisch, Türkisch und Arabisch in goldenen Lettern auf dem Obelisken.
Mit dem Künstler der documenta 14 habe man abgesprochen, drei Monate – also bis Ende April – zu warten, ob die gewünschten 600 000 Euro zusammenkommen, so Völker. Sollte dieses Spendenziel nicht erreicht werden, habe man mit dem Künstler darüber hinaus vereinbart, dass er entscheiden könne, ob er die bis dahin gespendete Summe als Kaufpreis akzeptiere.
Sollte dies nicht der Fall sein und der Obelisk nicht angekauft werden, würden alle Spender ihr Geld zurückbekommen. Die Kulturdezernentin machte deutlich, dass die Stadt keine Mittel zu dem Ankauf des Außenkunstwerkes zur Verfügung stellen werde.
Völker sagte aber auch, dass Firmen bereits signalisiert hätten, größere Summen für den Ankauf des Obelisken zu spenden. Bislang seien schon viele Anfragen bei der Stadt eingegangen, ob man für den Verbleib des Obelisken spenden könne. „Wir haben eine überwiegend positive Resonanz“, sagte Völker.
Auch der Künstler äußert sich mit einer schriftlichen Stellungnahme zu der Spendenaktion. "Der Obelisk wurde ausdrücklich für Kassel und für den öffentlichen Platz angefertigt, auf dem er steht. Hintergrund ist nicht die Politik, sondern die Geschichte der Stadt als einladender Ort sowie die einfachen, von allen anzustrebenden menschlichen Werte. Gastfreundschaft und Dankbarkeit sind keine politischen Themen. Der Obelisk ist gleichzeitig ein einzigartiges Kunstwerk und eine zusätzliche Bereicherung für das kulturelle Erbe der documenta-Stadt und die täglichen sozialen Interaktionen ihrer Bürger. Dieses Werk ähnelt keinem anderen, das in der jüngsten Vergangenheit nach Kassel gekommen ist."
Die Spenden können auf folgendes Konto überwiesen werden: Kassel documenta Stadt IBAN: DE16 5205 0353 0000 0110 99 BIC: HELADEF1KAS Da in dieser Spendenaktion die Absicht besteht, dass im Fall des Nichtankaufs eine Rücküberweisung des gespendeten Betrags erfolgt, bittet die Stadt um folgende Angaben: Spendenzweck: Obelisk sowie der Name des Spenders beziehungsweise der Firma und die genaue Anschrift.
Stellungnahme des Künstlers
Wir haben den Künstler Olu Oguibe um eine Stellungnahme zum möglichen Ankauf seines documenta-Obelisken gebeten. Hier ist seine Antwort im englischsprachigen Wortlaut.
As Kasselers and visitors milled around the wondrous stalls and displays at the Königsplatz during the recent Weihnachtsmarkt, it was fascinating to see how beautifully the merchants integrated the documenta Obelisk. Standing quietly in the background as though it had always been there, the Obelisk also called to mind the story of the infant child in whose name Christmas is celebrated.
In the Christian holy book, the Bible, we are told that soon after Jesus was born, his parents received news that his life was in danger. It was said that King Herod of Judea was searching for the child to kill him. His father Joseph was told in a dream to take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt for his safety. And so it was that Jesus and his family fled Judea, and found refuge in Egypt where they lived until Herod died. Flight and refuge, therefore, are at the very heart and foundation of the Christian faith and Christian civilization.
We have just learnt that more than 2 million visitors from not just every corner of Germany, but also from across Europe and perhaps, the world, came to the Königsplatz last mont for the Weihnachtsmarkt. It is more than auspicious, then, that a landmark which recalls the story of the early life of Jesus, and one that is modeled on an ancient form taken from Egypt, should stand on the plaza. Sometimes, art does find its place.
As I have stated before, the Obelisk that we made for documenta was specially made for Kassel, and for the square where it stands. The Obelisk is not based on politics, but rather, on the history of the City as a welcoming place, and on the simple human values that we all aspire to. Hospitality and gratitude are not political issues.
The Obelisk is also a unique work of art that further enriches the cultural legacy of the Documenta-Stadt and the daily social interactions of its citizens. It is safe to say that it is unlike any other work that has come to Kassel in the recent past. I’m honored that it has touched many people on a deep, human level. I’m also very happy that the majority have expressed a strong wish for it to stay. I obviously share that wish.
Since the end of documenta, other towns and cities both in Germany and abroad have expressed a desire to acquire the Obelisk, but I’ve always insisted that the Obelisk was made first and foremost for the people of Kassel and the Königsplatz.
Needless to mention that in addition to its emotional and cultural value, the Obelisk also has material value as a product of labor. As an artist, I rely entirely on my art for a living. It is the proceeds from my work that sustain my practice from one project to another, and I’m proud to make my living by not only doing what I love, but by making art that speaks to people so deeply, also.
By law, the City of Kassel cannot pay from its own budget for a public work from documenta. That’s why we must turn to citizens and the public to support such acquisitions. So, I encourage everyone to do their utmost best over the next several months, and help us pool resources together, to help the Documenta-Stadt keep the Obelisk in Kassel.
